CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) INFORMATION

What is the Coronavirus?

The Coronavirus is an enveloped positive single-stranded RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome virus of the Coronaviridae family, which comes in many forms such as SARS, MERS, and the new COVID-19 strain. These viruses have been observed to cause diseases in humans and birds, with symptoms varying in other species.

Coronavirus transmission/spread:

The COVID-19 strain is transmitted predominantly from person to person via respiratory droplets, more often expelled by coughing. Recent studies have shown the virus’ ability to survive on certain surfaces up to 3 days. This can then be transmitted from the infected surface by touching of the mouth, eyes, and nose with unwashed hands. The virus then has an incubation period generally from 2-14 days after initial exposure with most cases averaging 5 days.

Signs and Symptoms:

Infected persons may be asymptomatic or develop flu like symptoms including, but not limited to:

  • Fever
  • Dry cough
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore throat

Certain cases may progress into Pneumonia, multi-organ failure, and even death in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Prevention:

Currently there is no vaccine for the Coronavirus COVID-19. However there are measures that can be taken in order to protect yourself and others. Personal hygiene is the primary defense, wash hands often with warm water and soap for atleast 20 seconds. Avoid touching mouth, eyes, and nose after or while in public as this can transmit the virus to the body.
